DHEA is generally well-tolerated. Because DHEA converts to testosterone and estrogen in the body, some side effects are related to androgen (testosterone-like) activity and may be more noticeable at higher doses.
More Common Side Effects
- Acne or oily skin
- Hirsutism (unwanted facial or body hair growth)
- Mood changes
- Menstrual spotting
- Vaginal itching or irritation (more common with cream or suppository forms)
- Breast tenderness
- Fluid retention or bloating
- Headache
- Nausea
Less Common Side Effects
- Hair thinning or hair loss
- Fatigue or dizziness
- Changes in menstrual cycle patterns
Managing Androgen-Related Side Effects
If you experience androgen-related side effects such as acne or unwanted hair growth, contact your provider. Spironolactone may be recommended to help reduce these effects.

Stop using DHEA and seek emergency care immediately if you experience:
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
